Precision Folding Technology for Innovative Manufacturers

Hard Tooling Flowchart

The patented Industrial Origami Precision Fold Technology is based on the creation of fold defining geometries which, when put into sheet metal, enable structure and innovative shapes never before possible with traditional technologies. These features called "smiles", control the folding and are responsible for the accurate folding properties embedded in the sheet metal:

During folding, the straps bend and pull the material on either side of the "smiles" together into an edge-to-face contact. The leverage created by this contact forces the fold to occur along the fold line and guarantees a higher degree of accuracy;
The edge to face engagement bears compressive loads and provides strength and greater rigidity opportunity

Incorporation into Products: The Industrial Origami Technology is implemented through Industrial Origami's "Starter Kit" which includes all of the tools a manufacturer needs to design, prototype, and analyze parts they produce with Industrial Origami.

Use of Existing Capital Equipment: Existing hard and soft tooling equipment is used to stamp or cut the Industrial Origami features into sheet materials. The stamped or cut materials are then folded to create the desired shape(s).

Highly Accurate: Today, the accuracy of bending sheet metal parts to their final shape is highly dependent on expensive machinery such as a press brake or a stamping press. The accuracy of the finished part is critically dependent on this machinery for its ability to hold the desired tolerances, and often, on the operator. Industrial Origami's accuracy is built into the geometry of the flat part as it is punched. The accuracy of each bend and each formed leg of the part will maintain the same accuracy of the machine that originally applyed the lancing, in the flat. This means that there are virtually no tolerance stack-up errors from bend to bend, and the location of features are within the excellent tolerance of the equipment applying the lancing. Because the bend line is predetermined by the Industrial Origami lance geometry, the need for bending machinery that dictates the accuracy is removed. Folding or bending to shape with Industrial Origami requires holding the part and applying a force to one of the unsupported legs of the part, typically by a low-force, low-accuracy (and very low cost) pneumatic fixture. The resulting feature to feature accuracy is typically 5x better when comparing one Industrial Origami part to one conventional part, and about 10x better when comparing one Industrial Origami integrated subassembly into a single part to a conventional multi-part subassembly fastened together.

Broad Range of Thicknesses: The patented Industrial Origami Technology has been deployed in applications ranging from 0.010 inches and up to the limit of any cutting equipment.

Materials: Although the Industrial Origami Technology has been most widely adopted in sheet metal applications, it can apply to plastics, composites, and other sheet products.

Benchmark Testing: Industrial Origami has performed benchmark testing for electromagnetic interference, 3-point bending, salt fog corrosion and fatigue. These benchmark tests have shown remarkable strength and unusual resistance to fatigue.
